They Called It Vanity

For a long time, the worst thing anyone said about me was true.

I cared about how a desk looked. Not a little, not in passing. I cared the way people are supposed to care about serious things, except what I cared about was the exact shade a keycap turns under lamplight at eleven at night.

There is a word people use for that. They always say it the same way.

Too much.

A young woman sits alone in a dark, nearly empty room, her back to the camera, in front of a keyboard she has taken apart.

Too much for a keyboard. Too much for something you type on. It was explained to me, kindly at first and then less kindly, that a keyboard is a tool, that a tool does not need to be beautiful, and that a person who rearranges her desk at two in the morning has confused decoration for a life.

I had no argument. I had a dark room and a board I kept taking apart because the gray was wrong.

So I stopped defending it.

I let it be the flaw. I let people believe the shallow version, that this was about wanting pretty things, and I kept going where nobody had to approve. I got specific. I learned which whites go warm under a screen and which ones go dead. I learned that one accent key is the whole difference between a desk that is furnished and a desk that is finished.

By every measure anyone offered me, I got worse. More particular. Harder to please. More.

What They Got Wrong

Here is what took me years to say out loud.

Caring how something looks is not vanity. Vanity is wanting to be looked at. This was never that. This was wanting the eight hours a day I spend at this desk to feel like they belonged to me, and refusing to accept that a factory's opinion of my room should outrank my own.

That is not decoration. That is taste, and taste is only attention that refused to quit.

So This Is the Room

Everything here is what that became.
